ABOUT THE JUDGES

Ana Mesto Martín, Spain

A nature and animal lover, dogs have always been present in her life.

She began breeding more than thirty years ago with Dobermans. The first Clubsieger in Puppy Class at the 1st Spanish Dobermann Club Show was a dog from her first litter. Subsequently, she has bred other breeds, such as Spanish Galgo, Spanish Mastiff, Miniature Schnauzer, Pointer … and Yorkshire Terrier, although her heart breed is the Afghan Hound.

She studied architecture at the Madrid Higher Technical School of Architecture but later took up her real vocation of journalism, where she became the director of the Central Press News Agency. She gave up political and financial journalism to combine her two great passions: journalism and the dog world, joining the staff of the magazine “El Mundo del Perro”, of which she was editor-in-chief for four years.

Then, with her husband, Carlos Salas, she co-owns and edit for many years the magazines “La Revista del Perro” (one of the best dog magazines ever to have existed around the world), “La Guía del Perro” and “La Revista del Perro Pastor Alemán” (magazine specialising in German Shepherd Dogs) also, she is the co-author, with Carlos Salas, of “The new book of Yorkshire Terrier”.

They are both also the co-owners of the affix “La Villa y Corte”, under which they breed with great success Miniature Schnauzers, Pointers and, above all, Yorkies. With Yorkshire Terriers, they have obtained more than 300 championship titles all around the world, including three consecutive generations of World Winners, many European Winners…etc. and many BIS and BISS. Without any doubt, “La Villa y Corte” is one of the most prestigious Yorkshire Terrier kennels in Europe and one of those that enjoys the widest recognition worldwide, with champions in America, Europe and Asia.

Their achievements include winning, on several occasions and with different dogs, at the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America National Specialty and the Yorkshire Terrier Club of Greater New York, as well as the International Show marking the 100th Anniversary of the Japan Kennel Club in Tokyo … And Best of Breed at Crufts 2016 (125 Anniversary) and Crufts 2018.

Champions from their kennel, such as “Maserati de La Villa y Corte”, “Ferrari de La Villa y Corte”, “Torero de La Villa y Corte”, “Formula 1 de La Villa y Corte”, “Lara Croft de La Villa y Corte”, “Red Bull de La Villa y Corte” … etc. now form part of Yorkshire Terrier history all over the world.

Ana has been an FCI judge since 17 March, 1994. She is FCI allrounder judge and Yorkshire Terrier specialist by the Spanish Yorkshire Terrier Club. She has judged at championship level in the most important countries all around the world during last 27 years.

Over the last 25 years I have successfully bred and exhibited Shiba Inu under the Kazumi prefix, breeding and owning Shibas that have reached BIS level. Other breeds with which I have some involvement include Whippets, Setters and French Bulldogs, Shih Tzu and Labradors.

I have judged extensively throughout Australia, together with New Zealand, many countries throughout Asia, The Americas, UK and several countries in Europe. Highlights include awarding CCs to Bullmastiffs in the UK, judging the Bullmastiff World Cup in Budapest, Hungary and in 2014, and again in France in 2019. I had the pleasure of judging several breeds at the Helsinki World Dog Show. Carlos Salas, Spain

We might say that dogs have been the centre of both his personal and professional life.

After studying Political and Economic Sciences, he commenced his serious relationship with the dog world and, for the last thirty-five years, his activities have included: breeder, exhibitor, trainer, judge, writer, photographer and editor of specialised dog magazines.
He began with hunting dogs, which, through his family, had formed part of his life since he was a child and he still passionate about English Pointer of which is Specialist Judge.

Founding Partner of the Official Club of the Spanish Mastiff (AEPME) in 1981, he’s Specialist Judge of the breed and author of the "Plan de Cría" (“AEPME Breeding Planing”) established from 1998.

At the end of the seventies, he worked as a guard and protection dog trainer (holding a diploma in Obedience and Protection from the School of Animal Psychology, Techniques and Arts, which is recognised by the Spanish General Council of Veterinary Associations).

As a dog show handler, his greatest victories have included winning the Best in Show at the 1983 Dog World Show with the Spanish Mastiff “Tigre” and, in Yorkshire Terriers, the Best of Winners at the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America National Specialty, held in New York, with “Torero de La Villa y Corte” and the title of World Winner with “Huri de La Villa y Corte”, both of which were bred by him and his spouse.

He enjoys recognised prestige internationally as a photographer and his photographs have been published in dozens of specialised books and magazines. His innate interest in studying and researching into everything related to the different dog breeds and their origins and development has led him to collaborate assiduously with most of the publications that have existed in the sector in Spain since the end of the seventies, such as “Doggy People”, “Don Perro”, “Vida de Perros”, “El Mundo del Perro” (of which he was the editor), Guau (of which he was the technical editor), the daily newspaper “El País”, the magazine “Futuro”, etc…

Likewise, with his wife Ana Mesto, he is the editor and owner of “La Revista del Perro”, the dog magazine with the greatest international prestige and also of “La Revista del Perro Pastor Alemán”, a magazine specialising in German Shepherd Dogs and “La Guía del Perro”, an annual magazine.

He is the co-author of “El Nuevo Libro del Yorkshire Terrier”, with Ana Mesto, and of “The Ultimate Book of Mastiff Breeds” in his chapter about the Spanish Mastiff.

A convinced advocate of native Spanish breeds, he was a member of the Spanish Breeds Commission in the eighties, during the period where several of these breeds were studied and gained official status.

A well, with his wife, Ana Mesto, he breeds under the affix “La Villa y Corte”, one of the most important affixes worldwide for Yorkshire Terriers. In this breed, they have bred many World and European Winners, International Champions and champions of different countries in three continents. In 2016 and 2018 have been winners BOB at Crufts and U.K. Champion with his dog BISS, BIS, Multi Ch. “Red Bull de La Villa y Corte”. Under the same affix, they have also made up champions in Miniature Schnauzer and English Pointer.

In 1988, he collaborated in introducing and publicising Agility in Spain and, with the collaboration of CEAC (an important private educational organisation) and the sponsorship of Royal Canin, he organised the first course for Agility Monitors in Spain.

He has been an FCI judge since 18 January, 1990. He judges Best in Show and is a specialist judge for Yorkshire Terriers, Spanish Mastiffs, Spanish Galgos, Ibizan Hounds, Schnauzers, Dogo Canario and English Pointer. In addition, he is an international judge for FCI Groups 2 and 3, various breeds in different FCI Groups (1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10).

In 2011, he judged the Best in Show at the Spanish Kennel Club’s Centenary Show, one of the most important dog shows of all the celebrated to date in Spain.

For several years, he been a member of the Management Committee of the Spanish Kennel Club (RSCE), a member of its Judges Commission and the Delegate for Spanish Breeds.

Cristian Stefanescu, Romania

Since I was little we had dogs in the family and in general my love for animals was brought on me by my grandfather, a huge dog lover who also offered me my first dog, a small red Spitz. This happened back in 1974. I starded to breed English Cocker Spaniels in 1988 and since 2001 American Staffordshire Terrier. I first went to a dog show in Bucharest in 1981. It was the decisive moment in my evolution in the canine world. That was when I was “infested” with this virus and I believe that I will never “heal”. I have bred English Cocker Spaniels for 15 years, reds and blacks. A lot of the obtained puppies received excellent results both in national and international shows. I have managed to monitor them up to the fourth and fifth generation. Unfortunatelly, because of the great number of places I was invited to judge, I had to stop here but continued as a dog owner. It is better to know when to stop rather than do things half-way. In my opinion, having in view the limited time, you can`t do both things at top level. You need to choose, to feel what is important. This is just a personal opinion and I admire those people that can breed and judge at the same level. I do not think that there are many in this situation. I became an FCI judge since the year 1992 and since 2005 an all-rounder judge. I have the approval to judge all FCI recognized breeds, specialist judge for Molossoids and Bull Type Terriers and I`ve had the honour and pleasure to judge in these last years in all major European and World FCI dog shows. Since 1988 I was the secretary of the English Cocker Spaniel Club in Bucharest and since 1996 until 2005 I was the General Secretary of the Romanian Kennel Club. I am now the President of the Romanian Kennel Club and Chairman of the Metropolitan Area of Bucharest Kennel Club. The most important is that you truly love the DOG. If there is this feeling, the rest just comes naturally. But with a lot of hard work and lots of passion. A lot of time dedicated to study and an exemplary behavior towards the people who show and the organizers. Each moment of judging brings me a huge responsibility for what I say and do. I’m recipient of the Golden Medal of the Romanian Kennel Club and Hungarian Kennel Club. My biggest hobby, because I also have other hobbies, is photography as art and means of education and communication. More than anytime, and it also applies to the canine world, an image makes a thousand words. But, a good image, a quality image!

 Desmond Murphy, USA

Desi Murphy was born into the sport of dogs.  His grandfather managed kennels in Scotland, his father managed a whippet and greyhound kennel in the U.S.

While surrounded in his youth with 125 sighthounds, Desi’s found a love of terriers, bully breeds and Chows.
Desi, now a legend in the sport, is licensed to judge the sporting, terrier, and toy groups.

Desmond Murphy, of Monroe, New York, is a third-generation dog man; his grandfather, father, and two uncles all having been handlers. Born in Scotland, he was reared among Greyhounds, Whippets, and terriers at his family’s Mardormere Kennels in upstate New York.

He began handling in 1958, working under his uncle John Murphy, a distinguished handler and judge. Mr. Murphy, known as Desi, points to his handling of seven different Best in Show Chow Chows as his proudest achievement.

Mr. Murphy has been an AKC judge since 1976 and is approved to judge 93 breeds. He last judged at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in 2003.

Mr. Murphy is a member of the Tuxedo Park Kennel Club, the Santa Barbara Kennel Club, and the Saw Mill River Kennel Club, and is treasurer of the Non-Sporting Group Club of the Garden State. He considers “learning the value of preserving breed type” to be the most valuable lesson he has learned in dogs.

 Georgi Onishchenko, Ukraine

I got engaged in professional dog breeding in  1991 and since then I owned such breeds: Rottweiler, Caucasian Shepherd, Central Asian Shepherd, American Akita and Yorkshire Terrier.

In 2007 I was elected and in 2010 and in 2015 was re-elected the President of Ukrainian Kennel Union. I am also the Head of the UKU Show Commission.
I’ve been judging the special, national and international dog shows in Ukraine, Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Poland, Hungary, Latvia, Estonia, Serbia, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Slovakia, Slovenia, Moldavia, Czech Republic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, the Netherlands including World Dog Show in Leipzig.

Leif-Herman Wilberg, Norway

My involvement in dogs goes back to 1959 when our family bought our first dog, a German shepherd. We bred and showed German shepherds for 10 years before we imported our first Pembroke corgi from England.

We had a very successful start with our new breed as our first Pembroke ended up as Dog of the Year all breeds in Norway 1968. Since then we have made up more than 150 homebred national champions, and 35 international, and also many champions in other countries, many world and section winners, as well as numerous group and best in show winners.

Since the Norwegian Welsh Corgi Klubb started the Corgi of the Year competition in 1974, our dogs either homebred or imports have won the title 35 times.

Our most famous dog, Int.Ch. Siggens’s Hi Fi, who was Dog of the Year all breeds in Norway in 1983, was the first imported Pembroke ever to win a CC in England.
We started breeding Pembrokes with short tails in 1989 when Norway as the first country in the world introduced the docking ban. It took us about ten years to come back to the quality we bred before the docking ban, but are quite proud to say that bobtails bred by us have been made up champions in the major corgi countries like England, USA, Australia, Russia and all over Europe, and have won many groups and BIS and competing among the top dogs all breeds in Norway for many years. Our kennel received the Norwegian Kennel Clubs top breeders award in 2002 the first year it was awarded.

In my younger days I used to handle many different breeds for other people. In addition to making up champions in my two main breeds, I have made up champions in poodles, boxers, rottweilers, doberman, keeshonds, whippets, golden retrievers, labrador retrievers.
I have held all different positions in the Norsk Welsh Corgi Klubb, and have received the clubs honorary award “the docked tails order” for my work. I have served on the Norwegian Kennel Klub general committee from 1996 – 2006.
I was chairman of the NKK committee for judging education and examinations for 20 years and the representative for the NKK in the FCI committee for judging education for the same period. I have received NKK’s golden award for my work.
In February 2006 I was elected President of the FCI Show Commission and resigned in 2014
I have been on the committee of the Norwegian Dog Judges Associations for many years, also chairman for three years. and have received their golden honor for my work. I have been an FCI judge since 1976, and was passed as an FCI All Breed Judge in 2010. I have judged at breed specialties in many breeds in many countries, among which many corgi specialties in England, USA, Russia, Poland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Chech Republic, Slovenia, Italy etc.  I regularly judge at the major shows all around the world, among them I have judged at many World and Section Shows, Crufts, Sydney Royal etc

I was very honoured to be elected by the PWCCA members to judge the American National Specialty 2019. which has been one of my most precious judging appointments.

Maja Bubalo, Croatia

I was born in 1978. in Rijeka, Croatia, in a family of dog lovers. I have finished University of criminal studies and worked as an inspector in the Ministry of finance, and now for Goverment of Croatia as a State Inspector for Toursism. We have always had dogs, from my childhood, and somehow we were stuck with a Spaniels, English cocker spaniels. Immediately I have fall in love in a dog shows and dog handling. As we had British breeds I was very much concentrared in a British dog show scene. In 1991., BIS at the world famous dog show Crufts, won a dog of a breed that I have never seen before, a Clumber Spaniel.

It was that dog who won my heart, and my story has began. I have started researching the breed, reading articles, trying to find as many book as I can about the breed. Difficult time but fun time as than evrything was not all available on the internet. Finally I have found the kennel where I want to have my puppy from. From the start I had great communication with my breeders who at the end become my great friends, and there are no words that I can thank them for the patience and the knowledge they wanted to pass on me, my mentors.

In 1993. We have imported our first Clumber spaniel from England, soon after that I have moved to England to finish my education there and to gather experience in a famouus Clumber spaniel kennel »Belcrum«. While I was staying in England I have participated almost all Championship Dog Shows, most Open Shows, Game fairs and Field trails for Spaniels and Retrievers. At that time it was the best thing to do. I was very lucky, I have meet all those famous gundog breeders of that time, breeders about you can only reed in the books now. I wanted to learn, so I was talking to the breeders, listen to their experiences, learning from them about the morphology of the breed, about health and temperament, gathering my own view of the breed..... with good basis. I am happy that I have friends in the breed which I meet then, and some new ones, my English friends which I cherish by heart.

Since than I am active with my dogs on all dog show levels, at home and abroad. My dogs have won many national and international titles, world and european titles, group placements and BIS.

In 2010. Another breed come into my life, from a group of dogs that I have always admired, that are pointing dogs. My special friend Viszla, a breed so much different from a Clumber spaniel, but a breed wich will always have a special place in my heart.

I have been a correspondet of a Clumber Spaniel Club of GB for many years. From 2000. – 2006. I was a president of our local club, SKK Rijeka, after, I was a member of a executive commitie of the Club. Now, I am constantly involved in the Club activities, especially in   organizing International Dog Shows held in Rijeka.

As a crown of my achivement is passing my judging exam, and a start of this lovely new experience, judging. I judge as much as my professional work let me, I am proud I was judging Clumber spaniel Championship Club show of Great Britain, but also many more I have donne and enjoyed, I truly love this.

Maša Široka, Slovenia

Most of my spare time is dedicated to Cynology. I am active in the Cynological Association of Slovenia as a breeder, judge and member of the Board and the Breeding Committee of the Slovenian Terrier Club. Over the years, I have worked on the Organization Committee where we organized club shows, seminars, etc., in the past, I was the Club’s Secretary for 8 years.

As long as I can remember I have been fascinated with animals, especially dogs. I grew up with an Epagneul Breton and Irish Setter. Later we had Basset Hounds for more than 15 years. At that time I was involved in my hometown kennel club helping at dog shows as a ring steward. My mother was in charge of showing the Irish Setter and the Basset Hounds. During my student years my last Basset Hound got very old and I was looking for a breed that would fit more to my personality. My first Scottish Terrier came in to my life in 2003 and I fell in love with this breed. After that year I became much more involved in Terriers.

I registered my prefix Peabar (Gaelic name for Pepper) in 2005 when I had my first litter. I don't breed a lot but I try to do my best for this unique breed. Since then Peabar Kennels has consistently produced dogs that have been Best in Show and Specialty winners, as well as dogs that have been nationally ranked at the top of their breed in Europe and Overseas.
During the last 18 years I have visited many Terrier breeders around the World and I try to attend Crufts and Montgomery Show Weekend. “The more we travel more we learn” is my motto.
In addition to Dog Shows I love to work with my Terriers at Earth Dogs hunting trials and Lure Coursing trials.

I passed my first exam for Airedale Terriers, Wire Fox Terriers and Scottish Terriers in 2017.
Today I am a judge for FCI group 2. and 3.
Till now I have been judging as a breeder judge or as an FCI judge in the following countries:
Finland, Sweden, USA, Italy, Germany, Slovenia

I love to write about my trips and I usually share my traveling impressions in different magazines, such as Kinolog and Moj mali svet. A few of my articles were published also in Canine Chronicle, Dog News and Best in Show magazines.

My entire life, I never had a moment without animals. They have been my way of life since the very beginning.

Olga Šinko Kupriyanova, Slovenia

I have been involved with the dogs since my childhood. My first breed was Great Danes.
But my real infatuation have become English Bulldogs .Breeding them I have come
through all the joys and difficulties of the Breeder's life. I'm occupied with the breeding
for more than 30 years and during this time in my kennel "Lav April "-though not so big
indeed - there were born dogs which took part in the most prestigious shows of the
World and Europe . They have gained the highest titles - the Champion of the World
and the European Champion.
A few years ago I moved to Slovenija and now together with my husband . Stefan Sinko
. I keep on doing the same job as a co-owner in our kennel " JUBILEE"
At the moment there are a few dogs of another breed - Chihuahua -living in our kennel
as well . We have fetched from Mexico a few dogs of very high quality who have just
started thei show career and gained first titles.
As a logical continuation of breeding dogs I became the FCI judge nearly 35 years ago.
Since then I have been judging a lot. learning new breeds. I'm always interested in what
other people breed and judging gives me the unique experience to share my infatuation
with the other dog lovers
By this time I've judgedthe most prestigeous shows all around the world,
I have judged my preferred breed- English Bulldogs – at the World Championships a few  times and
the European Championships as well. Along with this breed I've judged also a lot of other breeds at the most prestigious shows throughout the world.

Robert Kanas, Slovakia

I was born in 1977. All my life has been connected with the love of animals, especially dogs. The first one was a Wirehaired Dachshund, later on came a Cesky Terrier, Skye Terrier, a West Highland White Terrier, also in co-ownership an American Cocker Spaniel, a Bobtail, an Irish Terrier and a Newfoundland. The FLANAGAN prefix was officially registered by the FCI in 1994 and we have bred several litters and very successful dogs under it. I still breed the Skye Terriers nowadays, but also the West Highland White Terriers with my wife Martina under her prefix SUNSHINE CELEBRATION. Our most important success includes many championships from not only European countries, international championships, several European and World Winner titles, including our bred dogs and Crufts, Westminster and Montgomery Best of Breed Winners. You can meet dogs from both of our kennels around the whole Europe, but also in Asia, Australia and on the American continent.

I have entered the world of dog shows thirty two years ago, first as an exhibitor of my own dogs, later on as a handler or groomer of other breeds.

I started judging in 2001. Today I am an international judge for all breeds of the FCI group 3, 4, 8, 9, 10 and some breeds from groups 1, 2, 5, 6, and Best in Show judge. I have judged many international, national and specialty shows in Slovakia, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and USA, from the most important shows I should mention the FCI World Dog Show 2009, 2021, FCI European Show 2011, 2014, 2016, 2018 World Special Terrier Show INTERRA 2013, the BIS at World Terrier Show Helsinky 2014 and the Montgomery National Specialty 2017 in US. Very often I judge Junior Handling. Out of all the show invitations I mostly appreciate to get the honor of judging club or specialty shows of different breeds.

I was a member of the organizing team of the European Dog Show 2003 and the World Dog Show 2009. You can often meet me at the shows also as the main ring speaker. I would especially point out the European Show 2003, the Doberman IDC World Show 2003, World Champion of Champions FCI VICTOR GRAND PRIX 2004 and the World Dog Show 2009.

Through the years I have been a member of the board of the Slovak Terrier and Fox Terrier club and currently I´m president of this club. Nowadays I´m chairman of the show committee of prestigious international dog shows Dog Expo Nitra – one of the biggest event in Slovakia. I´m member of FCI Show Commission.

Svend Løvenkjær, Denmark

I have been involved with dogs all my life. My passion for dogs started when I was no more than 12 years old and got my first Schnauzer.  At that time I was living in Sweden, and helping out regularly at a Schnauzer Kennel. This allowed me the opportunity to show the Kennel´s dogs as well as my own. Showing and breeding dogs remained a major part of my life - mainly English Springer Spaniels and Newfoundlands; several Champions and World Winners.
For the last 25 years I have been living in Denmark and it was here that I began judging. I feel my position as an all-breed judge to be a tremendous privilege. It has taken me to many parts of the world. However, in all my experience, I have never lost my great respect for dogs, breeders and exhibitors.
